How to Prepare Your Child for a Children’s Massage🧒

Children’s massage offers many of the same benefits as adult massage: it relieves tension, improves body awareness, supports emotional regulation, and helps with growing pains. Whether your child is dealing with sports-related tightness, anxiety, or just needs some time to unwind, massage can be a wonderful tool. Here’s how to prepare your child for a calm and comfortable session.

1. Talk About What to Expect

Kids feel more secure when they know what’s coming. Let them know that massage is a gentle, relaxing experience where the therapist will use soft touch to help their muscles relax. Emphasize that they can speak up anytime and that the session is just for them.

You can say something like:

“You’ll lie on a soft table and a person will use their hands to help your muscles relax. You can tell them if anything feels weird, tickly, or uncomfortable. You can tell the therapist to stop at anytime”

2. Let Them Choose What to Wear

Your child can wear a tank top and shorts if they’re more comfortable staying partially dressed, and we can work around that. We’ll always prioritize your child’s comfort and will check in with them during the session. Some kids are happy to undress to their underwear under a blanket; others prefer to stay fully clothed. Either option is completely okay.

3. You’re Welcome to Stay

Parents are invited to stay in the room for the session. If your child feels more at ease knowing you’re close by, your presence can be reassuring. We’ll set up a comfortable space where you can sit and relax while they get their massage. Over time, some kids may feel confident enough to try it solo, and that’s okay too.

4. Keep It Low-Key Before and After

Avoid scheduling right after a big event, sports practice, or a stressful appointment. A calm lead-up helps your child settle into the session more easily. After the massage, give them time to rest or do something quiet to let the effects sink in—like reading or cuddling at home.

5. Let Them Lead the Conversation

Some kids will come out of the session with big smiles and stories; others might be quiet or thoughtful. Don’t worry if they don’t say much at first—many kids process their experiences in their own time. The most important thing is that they felt safe and heard.

6. It’s Okay If They’re Nervous

First-time jitters are totally normal. We’re trained to work with kids of all temperaments, and we’ll move at a pace that feels right for them. We explain everything as we go, ask permission before touching any area, and give your child choices throughout the session.

Massage for kids is a safe, gentle way to support their growing bodies and busy minds. Our goal is to help your child feel more comfortable in their body and leave feeling calm, empowered, and cared for.
